TRAFFIC & SIGNAGE PRODUCTS

Signs for the protection of employees and visitors in a number of occupations are covered by AS/NZS 1319 – Safety signs for the Occupational Environment.  This standard outlines the design, format and colouring of the signs required to operate in a work environment.

Regulatory signs:
Mandatory and Prohibition:  Mandatory signs contain instructions that must be carried out and generally refer to personal protective equipment that must be worn whilst in that area.  Identified by a white background with a blue symbol disc and black text.  Prohibition signs provide directives on actions or activities that are not permitted.  Identified by a red circle with a red slash over a black symbol and accompanying black instructive text.

Hazard Signs:
Danger and Warning signs:  Danger signs warn of hazardous and dangerous conditions or situations that could be life threatening.  Identified by large lettering displaying the word “DANGER” with black instructive text on a white and red background.  Warning signs identify conditions or hazards that represent a risk of injury or damage which are not likely to be immediately dangerous to life and health.  Identified by a yellow background with a black triangle and black text/symbols.

Emergency Information signs:
These signs will indicate the location of, or direction to emergency related facilities, safety equipment or first aid services.
Identified by white symbols and/or text on a green background.

Fire signs:
The signs provide the location of fire fighting equipment and fire warning devices.  In addition, Building Codes Australia specifies the dimensions, colour and wording of these signs.  Identified with a red background and white text and/or symbols.
